Overview
A soft-tissue dental laser is a focused beam of light tuned to work on gum tissue and the bacteria that live in it. At Decatur Smiles, we use the Picasso Clairo to decontaminate periodontal pockets after the hardened buildup has been removed during a deep cleaning. It supports the cleaning; it does not replace it.
How it fits your gum care
- Deep cleaning removes the buildup. Scaling and root planing clear hardened deposits from the tooth and root surfaces.
- The laser reduces bacteria in the pocket. We use it as an additional step where your periodontal plan calls for it.
- Your care remains individualized. Your dentist will explain whether laser decontamination belongs in your treatment plan.
How it works
- We assess your gums. We measure the periodontal pockets and determine the cleaning your gums need.
- We protect your eyes. Everyone in the room wears protective glasses whenever the laser is on.
- We complete the deep cleaning. The hardened buildup is removed from the tooth and root surfaces.
- We treat the pocket. A fine laser tip is guided below the gumline to reduce the bacteria left in the periodontal pocket.
- We support healing. We give you aftercare instructions and monitor your gum health over time.
Why reducing bacteria matters
Bacteria can remain deep inside periodontal pockets even after the hard deposits have been removed. Adding laser decontamination to the cleaning lowers that bacterial load so the gum tissue has a cleaner environment in which to heal.
